The drums of the Middle East play an important role in the Bellydance world. Although percussion is part of Arabic music as a whole, it acts as the backbone of the rhythm for both the dancer and the musicians. It is exciting and mesmerising whether played solo or as an accompaniment to other instruments.

At The Hills School of Bellydance and Drumming we recognize the value of "live drumming" whether that be learning basic Arabic rhythms or playing for the dance classes.

"Nothing beats dancing to live music" says Terasa
( principal dance teacher at the school)

Karen Wray has been studying, teaching and performing Middle Eastern drumming for over 15 years, she has travelled to Egypt, Lebanon and Turkey to further enhance her knowledge of the culture and their music.

The rhythms are simple in their structure and the fine fingerwork can be challenging for the serious student.

Karen teaches beginners and intermediate students, either privately or as part of the weekly drum classes. She also teaches children's groups of all ages in the "Fun Drum Classes".
